The NIV 365 Day Devotional
The Spotter
Motorsports athletes almost always have the benefit of a spotter on their radio— someone who stands above the crowd and watches the race from above, giving the driver a unique perspective that helps their team run a better race. Spotters help their racers with strategy, give them constant updates on their progress, and keep them from crashing.
Wouldn’t it be great if everyone had a spotter—someone who had a larger perspective on life, who could help us avoid the pitfalls and encourage us so that we run a better race?
The truth is, spotters exist apart from the race arena. When we ask people we trust to help us with our life decisions, both small and large, we gain that outside “spotter’s perspective” that’s so important. A great example of this is parents who “spot” for their children to keep them out of danger, or trusted friends who can see the blind spots we don’t even know we have. Proverbs 9:9 says, “Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.” Who are the spotters in your life? And who do you have in your life who might look to you as their trusted spotter?
Remember, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7). When we find that godly spotter who can help us find our way, or we become that person for someone else, we can follow a faster racing line and avoid the potential wrecks ahead.
