Job 42 - Psalm 24

Job replies to God[a]

42 Then Job replied to the Lord. He said this:

‘I know that you can do all things.
You can do anything that you want to do.
    Nobody can stop you.
You asked me, “Why do you ask questions about my wisdom,
when you do not understand anything?”
It is true. I was speaking about things that I do not understand.
They are things that are too wonderful for me to know.
You said to me, “Listen carefully to what I will say.
I will ask you questions and you must answer them.”
In the past, I had heard about you from other people.
Now I have seen you for myself.
So I am ashamed of the things that I said.
I sit here in dirt and in ashes
to show you that I am very sorry.’

The end of the story[b]

When the Lord had spoken to Job, he said this to Eliphaz, the man from Teman:

‘I am very angry with you and with your two friends. The things that my servant Job has said about me are true. But the things that you said were not right. You three men must now go to Job. Take seven bulls and seven male sheep with you. Burn them as sacrifices for yourselves. After you have done that, my servant Job will pray for you. I will answer his prayer. Then I will not punish you as you deserve because of your foolish words. My servant Job has spoken the truth about me, but you have not.’

So Eliphaz, the man from Teman, Bildad, the man from Shuah, and Zophar, the man from Naamah, did what the Lord had told them to do. And the Lord answered Job's prayer.

10 After Job prayed for his three friends, the Lord made him a rich man again. He gave Job twice as many things as he had before. 11 Then Job's brothers and sisters came to eat a big meal with him in his house. People who had been Job's friends came also. They all told him that they were sad about his troubles. They were upset because the Lord had caused him to suffer. Each of them gave Job a piece of silver and a gold ring.

12 After this, the Lord blessed Job more than in the beginning of his life. All these animals belonged to Job: 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 pairs of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 He had seven sons and three daughters. 14 The daughters' names were Jemimah, Keziah, and Keren-Happuch. 15 They were the most beautiful women in the whole land of Uz. Job said that they should receive some of his things after he died, along with their brothers.[c]

16 Job lived for 140 years after this. He was still alive when his grandchildren and their grandchildren were born. 17 So when Job died, he had lived for a long time.

The two paths[d]

If someone does not do what wicked people tell him to do,
if he does not join with sinners,
if he does not meet with those who laugh at God,
God has blessed that person!
He is happy when he obeys the Law of the Lord.[e]
He thinks about God's Law during the day and at night.
He will become like a tree that grows beside streams of water.
It gives its fruit at the right season.
Its leaves do not fall off.
Everything that person does will have a good result.
But wicked people are as empty as chaff.
    The wind blows them away.[f]
So they will not go free when God judges them.
Sinners cannot join with God's people,
the people who are right with God.[g]
The Lord takes care of people who respect him.
But wicked people are living in a way that will take them to a bad end.

The Lord's king rules[h]

Why are nations making plans to turn against the Lord?
    All their plans will fail!
Kings and rulers decide to work together,
    to fight against the Lord
and the king that he has chosen.
They say, ‘We will not accept their authority over us!
We will get free from their power!’[i]
The Lord who sits on his throne in heaven laughs at them.
He says that their plans are useless.
Then he becomes very angry and he frightens them.
He warns them with strong words and he says,
‘I have put my king on his throne in Zion.[j]
I have put him on my holy mountain.’

I will tell you what the Lord has promised to me, his king.
He said to me, ‘You are my son.
Yes, today I have become your father![k]
Ask me and see what I will do!
I will give you all the nations on the earth.
They will all belong to you.
You will break them with an iron sceptre,
as if they are clay pots.’

10 So, you kings, think carefully!
You who rule the nations of the world, learn this lesson:
11 Respect the Lord and serve him.
    Enjoy his rule with fear!
12 Bend down low in front of his son!
If not, the Lord will be angry.
He will quickly become very angry.
You will suddenly die!
But as for those who serve the Lord as their king,
he blesses them and he takes care of them all.

This is a song that David wrote when he ran away from his son, Absalom.[l]

A morning song

Lord, every day I have more enemies.
    Many people fight against me.
They say about me,
    ‘God will not save him.’
Selah.
But Lord, you are like a shield for me.[m]
You are the one who gives me honour.
You lift my head up high.
I called aloud to the Lord.
He answered me from his holy mountain.
Selah.
I lie down and I sleep.
Then I wake up, because the Lord takes care of me.
Even if 10,000 enemies are all around me to attack me,
I will not be afraid of them.
Lord, stand up! My God, save me from my enemies!
Hit all my enemies in the face.
Break the teeth of those bad people.
Lord, it is you that saves us.
    You bless your people.
Selah.

This is a song that David wrote.

Tell the music leader to use stringed instruments.

An evening song

God, please answer me when I call aloud for help.
You are the one who shows that I am right.
    Help me in my trouble.
Show me that you are kind.
Listen to me when I pray.
Tell me this, you people:
How long will you refuse to respect me?
How long will you love stupid ideas?
How long will you agree with lies?
Selah.
The Lord is very kind to those who serve him.
He has chosen them to belong to himself.
So he listens when I pray to him.
Shake with fear and stop doing wrong things!
Lie on your bed and think quietly about your life.
Selah.
Offer the right sacrifices to the Lord.
    Continue to trust in him.
Many people say, ‘Will anyone do a good thing for us?’
Lord, let your face smile on us.
You have made me very happy.
I am happier than anyone who has lots of food and wine.
I will lie down and I will sleep in peace.
You, Lord, are the one who takes care of me,
    and you keep me safe.

Tell the music leader to use flutes.

This is a song that David wrote.

Pray about your enemies[n]

Lord, listen to what I say to you.
I am upset, so think about what I am saying.
My King and my God, listen to my voice.
I am asking you to help me.
    I am praying to you!
Lord, every morning you listen to my voice.
At sunrise I will turn to you for help,
and I will wait for you to answer.[o]
My God, you do not like anything that is bad.
Evil people cannot live near you.
Proud people cannot stand in front of you.
God, you hate everyone who does evil things.
You destroy those who tell lies.
The Lord hates murderers,
    and those who deceive others.[p]
But I will come into your house,
    because of your faithful love.
I will bend low in your holy temple,
    and I will worship you.
Lord, help me to follow your right way.
My enemies are waiting to attack me.
Show the right way clearly to me,
so that I do not go the wrong way.
My enemies never speak what is true.
They only want to destroy people.
Their mouth has the smell of an open grave.[q]
Their tongues say nice things,
    but they are all lies!
10 God, say that they are guilty!
Let their own wicked ideas bring punishment to them.
Send them away because they do so many bad things.
Yes, they have turned against you.
11 Please make people who turn to you happy.
Make them always sing with joy,
    because you keep them safe.
Take care of those who are faithful to you.
Then they will be really happy.
12 Lord, you bless those who live in a right way.
Your love is like a shield that keeps them safe.

This is a song that David wrote.

Tell the music leader, ‘Use harps when you sing this song.’

David prays for health[r]

Lord, when you are angry,
    please do not punish me.
I do not feel strong, Lord,
so please be kind to me.
Lord, please make me well again.
    Even my bones are shaking.
    I am very frightened.
Lord, when will you do something to help me?[s]
Lord, turn back to me. Give me back my life.
Make me safe because of your faithful love.
If I die, I will no longer remember you.
Nobody can praise you in their grave!
I am crying so much that I have no more strength.
My bed becomes wet because I weep all night.
My tears run into my pillow.[t]
I am so sad that my eyes do not see well any more.
They are becoming weak because of all my enemies.[u]

Go away from me, you people who do wicked things!
Now the Lord has heard me when I weep.[v]
I asked the Lord to be kind and to help me.
    Now he has answered me!
10 All my enemies will become ashamed!
They will go away from me in fear!
Shame will suddenly come to them!

A song with music that David wrote.

He sang this song to the Lord about Benjamin's descendant, Cush.

God always does what is right[w]

Lord, my God, I come to you to keep me safe.
Please save me from all those people who want to catch me.
If you do not keep me safe,
my enemies will tear me into pieces.
They will attack me like lions do,
and nobody will be able to save me.
3-5 Lord, my God, if I have done a wrong thing,
then let my enemies chase me and catch me.
If I have done a bad thing against a friend,
    let my enemies catch me.
If I have helped a friend's enemy to attack him,
    let my enemies catch me!
If I am guilty of any of these things,
let my enemies knock me down to the ground.
They should leave me there,
so that I lie as a dead person in the dirt.
Selah.
But Lord, now do something!
    Wake up and help me!
Show how angry you are against my enemies.
Punish them in the way that you know is right!
Bring together the people of all nations,
to stand in front of you.
Rule over them from high above.
You, Lord, judge the people of all nations.
Lord, Most High God, say that I am not guilty.
Truly, I am righteous and honest.
Stop wicked people from doing evil things.
    Keep your own people safe.
You always do what is right,
and you know how we think and feel.
10 The Most High God is like a shield to keep me safe.
He takes care of good, honest people.
11 God is a judge who is fair.
Every day he is angry against wicked people.
12 If they do not change the way that they live,
God will prepare to punish them.
He will make his sword sharp,
and he will put an arrow in his bow.
13 He will prepare his dangerous weapons.
He is ready to shoot his arrows that burn with fire.
14 Look! Wicked people prepare to do evil things!
    They want to cause trouble.
Like a pregnant woman,
what starts inside them comes out into the open!
They give birth to lies that deceive people.
15 Wicked people want to hurt people.
They are digging a deep hole for people to fall into.
But they fall into the hole themselves!
16 The ideas that they have to hurt other people
    bring trouble on themselves!
They want to be cruel to other people,
but they themselves receive the pain!

17 So I will thank the Lord
because he does what is right.
The Lord is the Most High God,
so I will sing to praise his name!

The music leader must use special music.

This is a song that David wrote.

The sky at night[x]

Lord, our ruler,
your name is famous all over the world.
The sky above shows how great you are.
You have taught children and babies to praise you.
You do that to show your enemies how strong you are.
Anyone who turns against you has to be quiet.
Your cruel enemies can do nothing!
You made the skies with your own hands.
When I look up, I see the moon and the stars.
You have put them all in their right place.
So why do you even think about men and women?
Why do you take care of humans?
You have made their place a little below God himself.[y]
You have given them honour, like kings.
You have chosen them to rule everything that you have made.
You have put everything under their authority.
7-8 Yes! Humans rule them all:
    Farm animals and wild animals,
birds, fish and all the things that swim in the sea.

Lord, our ruler,
your name is famous all over the world.

This is a song that David wrote.

The leader must use the music ‘Death of the son.’

A song to thank God[z]

All that I am says ‘thank you’ to the Lord.
I will tell people about all the great things that you have done.
I will be very happy because of you.
I will sing to praise your name, Most High God.
Because my enemies have seen your power,
they turned back and they fell down.
You won against them.
You showed that I was right.
You sat on your throne
as a judge who truly decides what is right.
Clearly you spoke against the nations.
You destroyed the wicked people,
so that nobody will remember them ever again.
Down came the cities of our enemies!
    You destroyed them for ever.
    People will just forget them.
Every day the Lord will rule as king.
He sits on his throne as judge.
He is fair when he judges all the people in the world.
He brings justice to all the nations.
For people who suffer, the Lord gives them a safe place.
When trouble comes to them, he keeps them safe.
10 Everyone who knows you, Lord, trusts in you.
You will never turn away from anyone who comes to you for help.
11 Give a song to the Lord to praise him!
He rules as king in Zion.
Tell all the nations about the great things that he has done.
12 God punishes murderers,
and he takes care of people who receive pain from others.
When they call to him,
he does not refuse to help them.
13 How my enemies cause me to suffer!
Please be kind to me, Lord.
You are the one who can save me from death.
14 Then I will praise you for everyone to hear!
I will tell the people of Zion that you have saved me,
and I will be very happy!
15 Into the deep hole that they dug,
    the nations themselves fell.
The net that they hid to catch me,
    caught their own feet!
16 The Lord has shown us who he is.
We know that he brings justice.
Wicked people will catch themselves
    in their own traps.
Higgaion.[aa] Selah.
17 Justice sends the wicked people away,
into the deep hole of death.
This will happen to all the nations
    that do not respect God.
18 Know this: God will not forget the poor for ever.
People who suffer should continue to hope.
19 Lord, stand up!
Do not let people turn against you!
Bring the nations to stand in front of you.
    Judge them!
20 Lord, make them afraid!
Make the nations know
that they are only weak and human.
Selah.

A prayer for help[ab]

10 Must you stand so far away, Lord?
Why do you hide when there is trouble?
Wicked people are cruel to poor people.
They use their evil ideas
to take hold of weak people.
Not only do wicked people boast
because they get the things that they want.
They also praise robbers,
    and they curse the Lord.
Wicked people are too proud to worry about God.
They think, ‘God will not give me any trouble.’
Often the wicked person seems to have success.
He does not respect your commands, God.
He laughs at all his enemies.
He says to himself, ‘There will be no trouble for me.
Nothing bad will ever happen to me or to my children.’
Plenty of lies come from his mouth,
    and he curses people.
The bad words that he speaks are very cruel,
    and they hurt people.
He hides near the villages,
so that he can jump out and catch people.
He watches in secret to find a weak person that he can kill.
He murders people who have done nothing wrong.
Quietly, he hides like a lion among some bushes.
He waits there to catch a poor, weak person.
Like a hunter, he catches poor people in his net.
10 He stamps on the people that he catches,
and he knocks them down to the ground.
The weak person falls down,
because the wicked person is too strong.
11 The wicked person says to himself,
‘God will give me no trouble!
He does not even see what I do.’
12 Rise up, Lord!
Do something, God,
and knock down the wicked person!
Do not forget to help weak people.
13 Why do wicked people insult God?
They say to themselves,
‘God will not give me any trouble.’
14 Surely, God, you see what is happening.
You see how wicked people bring pain and trouble.
You decide what to do about it.
The weak person trusts that you will help him.
You take care of children who have no father.
15 Take hold of the arm of the wicked, evil man!
Break it and take away his strength!
Punish him for the bad things that he has done,
so that he has to stop.
16 The Lord will rule as king for ever!
The nations who do not serve him
will not remain in his land.
17 You, Lord, hear the prayers
    of people who are suffering.
When they ask you to help them,
    you make them feel strong.
18 You stand beside those who have no father,
and those who are poor and weak.
As a result, they will no longer be afraid.
No human on the earth can frighten them.

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

Trust the Lord to keep you safe

11 I have run to the Lord to keep me safe.
So do not say this to me:
‘Fly away like a bird to the hills![ac]
See what the wicked people are doing!
They are preparing their bows and arrows.
They are hiding in dark places,
to shoot their arrows at good, honest people.
When the law no longer has authority,
    righteous people can do nothing!’

The Lord is in his holy temple.
He rules from his throne in heaven.
He carefully watches what people are doing.
    He knows about each person.
The Lord watches both good people and wicked people.
Good people please him,
but he hates wicked people and cruel people.
He will send hot coal and sulphur
to fall like rain on wicked people.
A dangerous wind will be the punishment that they deserve.
The Lord always does what is right.
He loves people to do good things.
Those who do what is right will know that God loves them.

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

A prayer for help

12 Lord, please help me!
All the good people have gone away!
No kind or faithful people remain.
Everybody tells lies to one another.
When they say nice things,
they do it to deceive their friends.
Lord, please shut their mouths!
When they deceive people or they boast,
    stop them doing that!
They say:
‘Nobody can tell us what to do!
We will say what we like to get what we want!’
But the Lord says:
    ‘Now I will do something!
I know the cruel things that wicked people do to poor people.
When weak people cry with pain, I hear them.
So I will make them safe,
as they want me to do for them.’
The Lord's promises are true.
We can trust them,
    because they are pure.
They are as pure as silver
that people have put in a hot fire seven times.[ad]
Yes Lord, you will take care of the poor people.
You will always keep each one of them safe
    from all those evil people.
But if people praise evil things,
then wicked people will boast more and more.

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

A prayer for help[ae]

13 Lord, will you forget about me for ever?
When will you remember to come and help me?
My thoughts make me worry all the time.
How long must I continue to be sad?
How long will my enemies continue to win against me?
Lord, please listen to me!
I feel that I am nearly dead.
Please give me the strength to live!
If I die, my enemies will say,
    ‘We have won against him!’
My enemies will be very happy if I fall.
But I will trust you because of your faithful love.
Please make me safe,
so that I can be happy and thank you.
Yes, I will sing to praise the Lord,
because he will surely help me.

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

God rules the world

14 Only fools say to themselves, ‘There is no God.’
People like that do bad and evil things.
None of them do things that are good and right.
The Lord is looking down from heaven.
He looks at the people of the world,
to see if there are any wise people among them.
He looks to see if anyone wants to know God.
But everyone has turned away from God.
    They have all become evil.
Not even one person does things that are right!
Will those evil people never learn?
They destroy my people,
as if they are eating a meal.
They never pray to the Lord.
Look at them! Now they are very afraid!
They see that God is with the people who obey him.
You wicked people tried to bring shame to poor people.
But the Lord keeps poor people safe.
The Lord is the one who can save Israel's people.
Please Lord, come now from your home in Zion!
When the Lord makes his people strong again,
    Jacob's descendants will be happy!
Yes, Israel's people will shout with joy![af]

David wrote this song.

How may we worship God?

15 Lord, who may stay with you,
    in your own home?
Who may live there,
    on your holy hill?[ag]
It is the person who does only things that are right.
It is the person who lives in a completely good way,
and who speaks only what he knows is true.
He says nothing bad against other people.
He does nothing that will hurt his friends,
    nor does he insult them.
He does not respect wicked people,
but he does respect people who serve the Lord.
When he promises to do something,
    he always does it.
He lends his money to help other people,
and he does not ask for more money in return.
He does not accept a bribe,
to speak against people who have done nothing wrong.
People who live in this way will always be safe.

David wrote this prayer.

God will help me

16 Please keep me safe, God,
because I come to you for help.
I have said to the Lord,
    ‘You are my Lord.
All the good things that I have in my life
    are gifts from you.’
When I think about your own people who live in this land,
    it makes me happy!
    They are truly great people!
But many troubles will come
to people who choose to worship other gods.
I will not join with them
to offer gifts of blood to their gods.
I will never use the names of their gods
    to make promises.
You, Lord, are all that I need.
What you give to me is enough,
for me and for my descendants.
Yes, you have given to me a good way of life.
Your gifts are better than good fields
    or valuable land.
I will praise the Lord,
who is my guide through life.
In the dark nights,
you help me to learn what is right.
I will always trust the Lord to be with me.
He is very near to me,
so I will not be upset.
I am truly happy and I thank God.
I know that my life is safe with God.
10 You, Lord, will not leave me
in the deep hole of death.
As one who belongs to you,
you will not leave my body to spoil in the grave.
11 You will lead me along the path of life.
Because you are with me,
    I am very happy.
I know that I will be with you for ever,
and that makes me very happy!

David wrote this prayer.

A prayer for help

17 Lord, please listen to me.
I am asking you to do something that is right.
I am speaking what is true,
so please do what I ask you to do.
Say clearly that I am not guilty.
You can see for yourself that I am right.
You look deep into my mind.
You check my thoughts at night.
When you test me,
you find nothing that is wrong.
I have decided that I will never tell any lies.
I have watched people do bad things.
But I have obeyed your commands.
I have not joined with cruel people
    to do what they do.
No, I carefully follow your ways.
I do not turn away from them.
I pray to you, God,
    because you will answer me.
Please listen to me when I pray to you.
Do great things that show your faithful love!
You have the power to keep people safe from their enemies.
You help them when they trust you for help.
Please keep me safe,
in the same way that people take care of their eyes.
Keep me near to you,
in the way that birds protect their babies under their wings.
Keep me safe from the wicked men who attack me.
My enemies are all around me,
and they want to kill me!
10 They refuse to be kind to anyone.
    They speak proud words.
11 Now they have found me. They are ready to attack!
They look for their chance
to knock me down to the ground.
12 They are like hungry lions.
They want to tear me into pieces.
They are hiding like young lions.
They are ready to jump out and catch me!
13 Lord, please do something!
Fight against them! Knock them down!
Take your sword and save me from those wicked men.
14 Lord, use your power to save me from them.
They only think about this world,
and they enjoy the good things that it gives them.
So give them all that you have ready for them.
Give them more than they want!
May their children also have plenty,
and enough left to give to their children too.
15 As for me, Lord, I am not guilty of sin.
So I will see your face.
When I wake up, I will see you clearly,
and I will be really happy!

This song is for the music leader.

The Lord's servant, David, wrote it.

David sang these words to the Lord when the Lord saved him from the power of his enemies. This was at the time when Saul was king.

Thank you, Lord![ah]

18 I love you, Lord.
    You make me strong.
The Lord keeps me safe.
He is my great rock and my strong place.
    God is my high rock.[ai]
I run to him to hide and be safe.
He keeps me safe like a soldier's shield.
He is the strong place where I can hide safely.
I praise the Lord because he deserves it!
When I called to him for help,
he saved me from my enemies.
Death was near enough to catch me!
Danger was like a river that poured over me.
Death was tying me up with ropes,
to pull me into the deep hole of the grave.
In my trouble, I prayed to the Lord.
I called to my God to help me.
He heard my voice from his home in heaven.
    My prayer reached his ears.
Then the earth moved and it shook.
Even the strong mountains shook,
    because God was angry.
He breathed out smoke from his nose.
Fire and hot coals came out from his mouth,
    to destroy his enemies.
God caused the sky to bend as he came down.
Dark clouds were under his feet.
10 He sat on a cherub and he flew.
The wind carried him as he travelled.
11 God covered himself with darkness.
He hid himself in dark clouds that held rain.
12 Bright light went in front of him.
Hail and lightning fell from the clouds.
13 The Lord sent thunder from the sky.
People everywhere heard the voice of the Most High God.
14 The Lord shot his arrows of lightning.
He caused his enemies to run away.
15 When you shouted against your enemies, Lord,
even the bottom of the deep sea appeared.
People could see the foundations of the earth,
when you breathed out in anger.
16 The Lord reached down to me from above.
He took hold of me and he pulled me up out of the deep water.
17 Yes, he saved me from my powerful enemies.
The people who hated me were too strong for me,
but the Lord saved me from their power.
18 They attacked me when I was in trouble,
    but the Lord helped me.
19 He led me out to a place where I would be safe.
He saved me because I made him happy.

20 The Lord was kind to me
because I do things that please him.
He blesses me
because I am not guilty of bad things.
21 I have obeyed the Lord's commands.
I have not turned against my God.
22 I understand all his rules,
and I do not refuse to obey them.
23 He knows that I have done nothing that is wrong.
I kept away from any sin.
24 The Lord has been kind to me,
    because I did good things.
He sees that I am not guilty.

25 Lord, if people are faithful to you,
then you are faithful to them.
If people do nothing that is bad,
they can trust you to do nothing bad to them.
26 If people always do what is right,
they can trust you to be kind to them.
But if people are wicked,
    you turn against them.
27 You save people who are humble.
But if people are proud, you bring them down very low.
28 Lord, you make my lamp burn brightly.
My God is my light in the dark.
29 You make me strong,
so that I can attack a whole army!
With the help of my God,
I can climb over any high wall.[aj]

30 God's way is perfect.
Yes, the Lord's promises are always true.
He keeps safe everyone who goes to him for help,
like a shield that keeps a soldier safe.
31 We know that the Lord is God,
    and no one else.
Only our God can keep us safe,
    like a strong rock!
32 It is God who makes me strong.
He shows me the safe way through my life.
33 He makes my feet stand strongly on the ground.
Like a deer,
I can stand on high mountains and not fall.
34 He teaches me how to fight in war.
He makes my arms strong
to shoot arrows from a metal bow.[ak]
35 Lord, your power has helped me to be strong.
You have kept me safe, like a shield.
Your kind help has made me great.
36 You have helped me to move safely,
so that my feet do not slip.
37 I ran after my enemies and I caught them.
I did not turn back until I had killed them.
38 I knocked them down to the ground.
They could not get up again.
    They fell under my feet.
39 You have made me strong to fight battles,
so that I win against my enemies.
40 You cause my enemies to turn around,
and they run away from me.
I can destroy those who hate me.
41 They call out for help,
but nobody is there to help them.
They call to the Lord,
but he does not answer them.
42 I beat them into dust
    that the wind blows away.
I walk over them,
like dirt that lies on the streets.

43 You have saved me from people who attacked me.
You made me a ruler of other nations.
People that I did not know before
now serve me as their ruler.
44 When foreign people hear about me,
    they choose to obey me.
They cannot stand against me
    because they are afraid.
45 They are not brave enough to fight me.
They shake with fear,
as they come out of their strong cities.

46 The Lord is alive! He is my strong Rock!
    Everyone should praise him!
    He rules as king!
He is the God who saves me.
47 He is the true God who punishes my enemies.
He makes the nations obey me.
48 He is the one who saves me from my enemies.
Yes, God, you give me power
to win against those who attack me.
You keep me safe from angry and cruel men.
49 Lord, I will thank you,
so that all the nations know about you.
I will sing to praise your name.
50 Yes, the Lord gives power to me, David, his king.
He gives me great strength to win against my enemies.
I am the special king that he has chosen.[al]
He will continue to be kind to me
and to my descendants for ever.

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

God teaches us about himself

19 The heavens show us how great God is.
The sky above shows his good work.
Each day speaks about God,
until the next day continues the story.
Every night tells us how great God is.
They do not use words to speak with.
    Nobody hears their voice.
But their message goes round all the earth.
All the world can understand what they say.

God has made a home for the sun in the sky.
Each morning, the sun comes out,
like a happy man who has just married.
It comes out,
like a strong man who wants to run a race.
The sun rises at one end of the heavens.
It travels in a big circle to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat.[am]

The law of the Lord is perfect.
    It makes us strong again.
We can trust what the Lord teaches us.
He helps ordinary people to be wise.
The Lord's rules are always right.
If we obey them, they make us really happy.
The Lord's commands are completely good.
They show us how to live in a good way.
It is right for us to respect the Lord.
    That will always help us.
The laws of the Lord are true.
    They are right and fair.
10 They are more valuable than gold,
    even the best gold.
They are sweeter than the best honey.
11 Your laws warn us to do what is right.
If we obey them, they are a great help to us.[an]

12 Nobody realizes every time they do something wrong.
Please forgive me for the sins that I do not know about.
13 Lord, stop me doing things that I know are wrong.
Do not let those sins rule my life.
Then I will not be guilty.
I will not have turned against you in a bad way.

14 Lord, I want to make you happy.
I want my words and my thoughts to please you.
You are my strong Rock
    and you are my Redeemer.[ao]

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

We trust God to help us[ap]

20 May the Lord answer you
when you are in trouble and you call to him for help.
May Israel's great God keep you safe.
He will send help to you from his holy place,
    from his temple in Zion.
He will remember the gifts that you have offered to him.
He will accept your burnt offerings
Selah
May God give to you
all the things that you really want.
He will help you to do everything that you want to do.
Then we will be happy and we will shout aloud
when you win against your enemies.
We will wave our flags to praise our God.
Yes, I pray that the Lord will do for you
everything that you ask him to do.

Now I know that the Lord will save
the king that he has chosen.
God will agree to help him from his holy place in heaven.
God will use his great power to make his king safe.
Some people hope that their chariots will keep them safe.
Other people trust their horses to save them.
But we will trust in the name of the Lord our God.
Those people will fall down,
and they will not get up again.
But we will get up and stand again,
    and we will be strong.
Lord, help the king to win against his enemies!
Please answer us when we ask you for help.

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

We thank God for his help[aq]

21 Lord, the king is happy,
because you help him with your great strength.
You have helped him to win against his enemies,
    so he is very happy.[ar]
You have given to him all the things
    that he really wanted.
When he asked for them,
you have not refused to give them to him.
Selah.
You came to him,
and you blessed him with many good things:
You put a crown on his head.
It was made from the best gold.
He asked you to keep his life safe,
and you gave to him a long life.
His descendants will continue for ever.
People praise him,
because you have helped him to win against his enemies.
You have caused him to rule as a great king.
You will continue to bless him for ever.
Because you are very near to him,
    he is very happy.
The king trusts in the Lord.
Because of the Most High God's faithful love,
    the king will never fail.

You will use your strong power
to take hold of your enemies.[as]
You will catch everybody that hates you.
When you come out to fight against them,
you will destroy them like a hot fire.
The Lord destroys them,
because you are angry with them.
10 You will remove your enemies' children from the earth.
They will no longer have any descendants.
11 They decided to hurt you.
They thought how they would do that.
But they could not do anything bad against you.
12 No! You shoot your arrows at them,
so that they turn round and they run away!

13 Get up, Lord, and show your strength!
We will sing to praise you
    because you have great power.

The leader must use the music called ‘The Deer of the Dawn.’

This is a song that David wrote.

Please help me, God!

22 My God!
My God, why have you left me alone?
Why is my help far away?
I am crying out in great pain!
My God!
I call aloud to you for help every day,
    all day and all night!
But you do not answer my prayers,
    so I cannot sleep.
I know that you are the Holy God.
You sit on your throne as king,
    and Israel's people praise you.
Our ancestors trusted in you.
When they trusted you, you saved them.
They called aloud to you and you saved them.
They trusted in you,
and you did not disappoint them.[at]

People insult me.
They think that I am worth nothing.
It seems that I am only a worm,
and I am not really a man.
Everyone that sees me laughs at me.
They laugh and they shake their heads.
They say, ‘He should trust in the Lord!
    The Lord should save him.
If the Lord is really happy with him,
    the Lord should rescue him.’

Lord, you brought me safely to birth.
You took care of me at my mother's breasts.
10 From the day that I was born,
I have always been in your care.
You have been my God since my mother gave birth to me.
11     So do not stay far from me now.
Trouble is near to me,
and there is nobody to help me.
12 There is danger all round me,
like the strong bulls of Bashan.[au]
I cannot move
because my enemies are very near, all around me.
13 They open their mouths like lions!
They are ready to eat me!
They are like lions that tear their food into pieces.
14 My strength has gone,
like water that is poured away.
My bones do not join together properly.
I feel weak inside
    and hope has disappeared.
15 My mouth has become dry like a piece of a broken pot.
My tongue sticks to my mouth.
You have left me down in the dirt,
    as good as dead!

16 Wicked people are everywhere around me.
They are ready to attack me,
like a group of wild dogs.
They tear apart my hands and my feet.
17 My body is so weak
I can count all my bones.
My enemies look at me and they laugh.
They are happy because I have pain.
18 They have taken my clothes,
and they choose what they want for themselves.
They throw dice to decide who receives each piece.

19 But Lord, please do not stay far away from me!
You can make me strong again.
    Please hurry to help me!
20 Keep me safe!
My enemies want to kill me with their swords.
Save my life from those wild dogs!
21 Do not let those lions eat me!
Keep me safe from the horns of those wild bulls!
I know that you have answered my prayer!

22 I will tell my people how great you are.
I will praise you when we meet together.
23 Everyone who serves the Lord must praise him!
All Jacob's descendants must respect him!
Yes, all Israel's people must worship him!
24 God did not forget to help the man who was in pain.
He did not turn away from the one who suffered.
When he called to God for help,
    God answered his prayer.[av]

25 Yes, I will praise you, God,
in the great meeting of your people.
I will give to you what I have promised to give.
Everyone who serves you, Lord, will see that.
26 Poor people will have plenty of food to eat.
Those who come to the Lord will praise him.
May God help you to live well for ever!
27 People everywhere in the world will respect the Lord.
They will turn to him for help.
Families from all nations will worship you.
28 The Lord rules as king over all the nations.
29 All the rich people on earth will bend down,
    and they will worship God.
Everyone will die one day.
They must all bend down in front of God.
Nobody can keep himself alive.
30 Our children will also serve God.
And they will tell their children about our Lord.
31 They will speak about all the great things that God has done
    to save his people.
People who have not yet been born
will learn about the things that God has done.[aw]

This is a song that David wrote.

God takes care of his people[ax]

23 The Lord takes care of me,
like a shepherd with his sheep.
I have everything that I need.
He takes me to green fields where I can rest.
He leads me to streams of water where I can drink.
He gives me new strength in my life.
He is my guide to the right paths.
He does this to give honour to his name.
I may walk through a valley that is as dark as death.
But I will not be afraid of any danger.
This is because you are with me, Lord.
Your stick and your shepherd's pole protect me from danger.

You prepare a big meal for me while my enemies watch.
You put olive oil on my head.
You bless me so much that my cup is completely full.
I am sure that you will always be good to me.
You will love me all the days of my life.
    That will never change.
I will live in the Lord's house for as long as I live.

This is a song that David wrote.

The great King[ay]

24 The whole earth belongs to the Lord.
Everybody who lives in the world
and all the things in it belong to him.
The Lord built the foundation of the earth.
He built it on the seas and the rivers.[az]

Who may climb up the hill of the Lord?[ba]
Who can stand in his holy place?[bb]
Only the person who does what is right,
    and who has pure thoughts.
He does not worship idols
and he does not make false promises.
The Lord will bless people who are like that.
God will save them.
He will say that they are not guilty of wrong things.
People like that come to God.
    They want to please him.
They like to pray to the God of Jacob.
Selah.
Old gates of the city, wake up!
Open now, to leave a wide path!
Then the great king will come in.
Who is this great king?
He is the Lord,
    who is strong and powerful.
He is the Lord,
    who wins against his enemies.
Be ready, you old gates of the city!
    Be ready to open wide!
Then the great king will come in.
10 Who is this great king?
He is the Almighty Lord.
Yes, he is the great king!
Selah.
