¹⁸ Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke because the Lord came down on it in fire.^(A) Its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace,^(B) and the whole mountain shook violently.^(C)

The People’s Reaction

¹⁸ All the people witnessed^[a] the thunder and lightning, the sound of the ram’s horn, and the mountain surrounded by smoke. When the people saw it^[b] they trembled and stood at a distance.^(A)

⁵ Then the Lord will create^(A) a cloud of smoke by day^(B) and a glowing flame of fire by night over the entire site of Mount Zion and over its assemblies. For there will be a canopy over all the glory,^[a]

⁴ The foundations of the doorways shook^(A) at the sound of their voices, and the temple was filled with smoke.
