The day of Jerusalem,
Who said, “Raze it, raze it

Oracles about Edom and Arabia
11 The [a]oracle concerning [b](A)Edom.
One keeps calling to me from (B)Seir,
“Watchman, [c]how far gone is the night?
Watchman, [d]how far gone is the night?”
12 The watchman says,
“Morning comes but also night.
If you would inquire, inquire;
Come back again.”

God’s Wrath against Nations
34 Draw near, (A)O nations, to hear; and listen, O peoples!
(B)Let the earth and [a]all it contains hear, and the world and all that springs from it.
2 For the Lord’s (C)indignation is against all the nations,
And His wrath against all their armies;
He has [b](D)utterly destroyed them,
He has given them over to (E)slaughter.
3 So their slain will be (F)thrown out,
And their corpses [c]will give off their (G)stench,
And the mountains will [d]be drenched with their (H)blood.
4 And (I)all the host of heaven will [e]wear away,
And the (J)sky will be rolled up like a scroll;
All their hosts will also wither away
As a leaf withers from the vine,
Or as one withers from the fig tree.
5 For (K)My sword is satiated in heaven,
Behold it shall descend for judgment upon (L)Edom
And upon the people whom I have (M)devoted to destruction.
6 The sword of the Lord is filled with blood,
It is [f]sated with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice in (N)Bozrah
And a great slaughter in the land of (O)Edom.
7 (P)Wild oxen will also [g]fall with them
And (Q)young bulls with strong ones;
Thus their land will be (R)soaked with blood,
And their dust [h]become greasy with fat.
8 For the Lord has a day of (S)vengeance,
A year of recompense for the [i]cause of Zion.
9 [j]Its streams will be turned into pitch,
And its loose earth into (T)brimstone,
And its land will become burning pitch.
10 It will (U)not be quenched night or day;
Its (V)smoke will go up forever.
From (W)generation to generation it will be desolate;
(X)None will pass through it forever and ever.
11 But [k](Y)pelican and hedgehog will possess it,
And [l]owl and raven will dwell in it;
And He will stretch over it the (Z)line of [m]desolation
And the [n]plumb line of emptiness.
12 Its nobles—there is (AA)no one there
Whom they may proclaim king—
And all its princes will be (AB)nothing.
13 Thorns will come up in its (AC)fortified towers,
Nettles and thistles in its fortified cities;
It will also be a haunt of (AD)jackals
And an abode of ostriches.
14 The desert (AE)creatures will meet with the [o]wolves,
The [p](AF)hairy goat also will cry to its kind;
Yes, the [q]night monster will settle there
And will find herself a resting place.
15 The tree snake will make its nest and lay eggs there,
And it will hatch and gather them under its [r]protection.
Yes, (AG)the [s]hawks will be gathered there,
Every one with its kind.
16 Seek from the (AH)book of the Lord, and read:
Not one of these will be missing;
None will lack its mate.
For [t](AI)His mouth has commanded,
And His Spirit has gathered them.
17 He has cast the (AJ)lot for them,
And His hand has divided it to them by (AK)line.
They shall possess it forever;
From (AL)generation to generation they will dwell in it.

God’s Vengeance on the Nations
63 Who is this who comes from (A)Edom,
With (B)garments of [a]glowing colors from (C)Bozrah,
This One who is majestic in His apparel,
[b]Marching in the greatness of His strength?
“It is I who speak in righteousness, (D)mighty to save.”
2 Why is Your apparel red,
And Your garments like the one who (E)treads in the wine press?
3 “(F)I have trodden the wine trough alone,
And from the peoples there was no man with Me.
I also (G)trod them in My anger
And (H)trampled them in My wrath;
And (I)their [c]lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,
And I [d]stained all My raiment.
4 “For the (J)day of vengeance was in My heart,
And My year of redemption has come.
5 “I looked, and there was (K)no one to help,
And I was astonished and there was no one to uphold;
So My (L)own arm brought salvation to Me,
And My wrath upheld Me.
6 “I (M)trod down the peoples in My anger
And made them (N)drunk in My wrath,
And I [e]poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Prophecy against Edom
7 Concerning (A)Edom.
Thus says the Lord of hosts,
“Is there no longer any (B)wisdom in (C)Teman?
Has good counsel been lost to the prudent?
Has their wisdom decayed?
8 “Flee away, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of (D)Dedan,
For I [a]will bring the (E)disaster of Esau upon him
At the time I [b]punish him.
9 “(F)If grape gatherers came to you,
Would they not leave gleanings?
If thieves came by night,
They would destroy only [c]until they had enough.
10 “But I have (G)stripped Esau bare,
I have uncovered his hiding places
So that he will not be able to conceal himself;
His [d]offspring has been destroyed along with his [e]relatives
And his neighbors, and (H)he is no more.
11 “Leave your [f](I)orphans behind, I will keep them alive;
And let your (J)widows trust in Me.”
12 For thus says the Lord, “Behold, those [g]who were not sentenced to drink the (K)cup will certainly drink it, and are you the one who will be (L)completely acquitted? You will not be acquitted, but you will certainly drink it. 13 For I have (M)sworn by Myself,” declares the Lord, “that (N)Bozrah will become an (O)object of horror, a reproach, a ruin and a curse; and all its cities will become perpetual ruins.”
14 I have (P)heard a message from the Lord,
And an (Q)envoy is sent among the nations, saying,
“(R)Gather yourselves together and come against her,
And rise up for battle!”
15 “For behold, I have made you small among the nations,
Despised among men.
16 “As for the terror of you,
The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,
O you who live in the clefts of [h]the (S)rock,
Who occupy the height of the hill.
Though you make your nest as (T)high as an eagle’s,
I will (U)bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.
17 “Edom will become an (V)object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will (W)hiss at all its wounds. 18 Like the (X)overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says the Lord, “(Y)no one will live there, nor will a son of man reside in it. 19 (Z)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the [i](AA)thickets of the Jordan against [j]a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever is (AB)chosen I shall appoint over it. For who is (AC)like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd (AD)who can stand against Me?”
20 Therefore hear the (AE)plan of the Lord which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their [k]pasture (AF)desolate because of them. 21 The (AG)earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the [l]Red Sea. 22 Behold, [m]He will mount up and (AH)swoop like an eagle and spread out His wings [n]against Bozrah; and the (AI)hearts of the mighty men of Edom in that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

Edom
12 ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Because (A)Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred grievous guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,” 13 therefore thus says the Lord God, “I will also (B)stretch out My hand against Edom and (C)cut off man and beast from it. And I will lay it waste; from (D)Teman even to (E)Dedan they will fall by the sword. 14 (F)I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom (G)according to My anger and according to My wrath; thus they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God.
